Fungal nail disease, medically referred to as onychomycosis, affects many people. Fungi that feed on keratin, a structural protein within your nails, frequently cause the condition. Fungal colonies proliferate in moist environments and invade the nail bed by penetrating the margins of the nail resulting in pain, impaired ability to walk, yellowing and cracking of the nails, and negative self-image. Solutions offered to date include prescription medications that have side effects and surgery to remove the nail; neither are comfortable or popular treatment options for the millions suffering from nail fungus.

Nail Fungus Laser Treatment

Laser therapy is the newest treatment we offer for fungal toenails and improves the appearance of the nails in many patients. The nail fungus laser machine works by penetrating the nail plate and destroying the fungus under the nail. There is no pain and no side effects. The best results and the best-looking toenails occur with three laser sessions and the use of the specific protocol.

Compared to traditional methods, laser therapy is a safe, non-invasive means to clear nail fungus and it is gaining popularity.

Types of Nail Fungal Infection

Treat Nail Fungus with Dimed 1064nm Diode Laser

During the laser treatment, a laser beam will be slowly directed across the nail bed. The energy of the laser beam is absorbed by the underlying fungal colony. This denatures the enzymes within the fungus that allow continued growth. You will feel a warm sensation during the procedure, which lasts 1 minute to 2 minutes per toenail. There may be some discomfort or a slight pain sensation but most patients find it very tolerable and no anesthetic is required.

How Soon Will Laser Treatment Clear The Nail?

While a single treatment may be enough, a series of 3 – 4 treatments, spaced 5 – 6 weeks apart, is recommended to achieve optimal results. As the nails resume healthy growth, they will grow in clear. You will start to see results in 2 – 3 months. Nails grow slowly – the big toenail can take up to a year to increase from bottom to top. While you may not see a significant improvement for several months, you should see a gradual growth of clear nails and achieve complete clearance in about a year.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Laser Nail Fungus Therapy?

Most clients experience no side effects other than warmth during treatment and a mild warming sensation after treatment. However, possible side effects may include a feeling of warmth and/or slight pain during treatment, redness of the treated skin around the nail lasting 24 – 72 hours, slight swelling of the treated skin around the nail lasting 24 – 72 hours, discoloration or burn marks may occur on the nail. In very rare cases, blistering of the treated skin around the nail and scarring of the treated skin around the nail may occur.
